I recently ran across a quote that I’d heard before. I can’t remember who said it initially, but it’s one of the most in-your-face things that a pastor or Christian leader can say to a congregation.
There are millions of people that are dying of starvation and most of you don’t give a shit. In fact, you’re more concerned that I said, ‘shit,’ than the fact that there are millions of people dying of starvation.
I’ve heard a few variations of this too:
There are thousands of people dying and going to hell every day and most of you don’t give a damn. In fact, you’re more upset that I said, ‘damn,’ than the fact that there are thousands of people dying and going to hell.
The latter was said by an old mentor of mine, Bob Hughey. His in-your-face passion for Jesus was as contagious as it was genuine. Statements like this are what really drive me to thinking if some of us are a little too concerned with four-letter words and a little too unconcerned with life around us.
“Seek first the kingdom of God…” Maybe then, we’ll give a damn. Just a thought.
