Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn not only appeared on a radio show run by a SPLC-certified hate group, but was “thankful” for that appearance.
Blackburn, who voted to oppose the payroll tax holiday, and has made an asinine issue of incandescent light bulbs, showed that her bulb was clearly dimmed when she appeared on “FRC Radio” with AFA leader “Time Wildmon” (sic) and FRC president Tony Perkins. Both organizations are listed as hate groups because of their frequent dispensation of known falsehoods.
The Maryland State Senate passed a bill approving same-sex marriages in that state yesterday with a vote of 25 to 22. Democratic governor Martin O’Malley has promised to sign the bill into law. With yesterday’s vote, The Old Line State became the third state to pass gay marriage with legislative action in less than a month.
One of the more popular doctrines to have permeated the evangelical and fundamentalist communities is a concept known among theologians as dispensationalist premillennialism. For the rest of us, we call it the “rapture,” or the “pretribulational rapture.” This particular little bit of Christian culture owes much to the more fundamentalist side of the Christian coin, and is easily one of the first major cracks I noticed in my own fundamentalist world.
Big news in the Prop 8 case — the Proponents have officially challenged our Ninth Circuit victory. So let’s talk about what that means for the Prop 8 case, what comes next, and when we can finally start getting married again. Watch the video after the jump.
The life of any Christian — I’d dare say every Christian — has one primary influence; a single, defining element that is at the very heart and crux of our great faith: the Holy Bible. No matter the denomination, the sect, or whether it’s one of a multitude of storefront churches across the country, the Bible is the basis of that church’s doctrine.
Like many southern Americans, I’ve grown up surrounded by evangelical, fundamentalist Christianity. Every day, every event, and every moment of my life was filtered through the great cheesecloth of my life that was fundamentalism. No word was spoken, and no action was ever taken without being bombarded in my mind by a myriad of rules, laws, and condemnations that shaped my very existence.
I’ve had this tune in my head for a while. The “Chim Chim Cheroo” number from Mary Poppins. Whenever a hate group leader like Tony Perkins or some other bigoted clod starts in on their anti-gay blathering, or when some end-times prophet tries to equate President Obama with some obscure Bible prophecy, I put a new twist on that old, fun little ditty (And yes, this is original to me. If you re-post, please link and credit properly):
Everyone has their journey to self acceptance. Mine began years ago shortly after I reached the age of 30. By then, I was never truly confronted with my gay orientation. When I finally encountered a man who forever changed my life and the way I love, I not only faced my inner demons head-on, but vanquished them. I wrote this essay in late 2003 to help complete that process.
I would eventually explore each of these themes in detail, but this was my turning point — and it not only helped me to put my thoughts together, but I later learned that it helped others as well. My hope is that my story will continue to touch lives…
