This is What Love in Action Looks Like – A Story of Grace

By David W. Shelton On May 11, 2012 · 1 Comment · In Gay Christians, I'm Gay, Movie Reviews
Full circle. It’s a phrase that denotes a kind of personal completion that a person rarely achieves, but is a momentous occasion when they do. That’s how I felt after watching the newly released documentary, This is What Love in Action Looks Like. The film chronicles the story of Zach Stark, who was forced by his parents into Refuge, a live-in program that was centered around the concept of reparative therapy. Zach’s story is one that spoke to me years ago when I first heard about it in the summer of 2005. At the time, we were in the process of forming a new PFLAG (Parents, Friends & Families of Lesbians and Gays) chapter, and it was a poignant reminder of just how much we need to support each other:

Save Me: a new film that explores ex-gay ministries

By David W. Shelton On September 19, 2008 · Add Comment · In Movie Reviews
When Chad Allen, who was regularly seen in episodes of Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman, was outed in a tabloid, his career was instantly put into question. But Allen, like most gay actors, would find his niche eventually. He appears in the new film Save Me, which held its New York and Los Angeles premiere this [...]

Hellboy 2: Heroes are red, lovers are blue

By David W. Shelton On July 19, 2008 · 1 Comment · In Movie Reviews
The world that Hellboy II: The Golden Army (hereafter Hellboy 2) presents is one that is filled with images of the fantastic, the bizarre, and the mysterious. In this world, it’s the humans that are the outsiders, while the trolls, demons, and even the Angel of Death collaborate deliver a tale that’s part parable, part [...]

The Dark Knight: perfection

By David W. Shelton On July 18, 2008 · 2 Comments · In Movie Reviews
When the closing credits rolled for The Dark Knight, I was left in stunned silence. In what is easily the best film of the year so far (and clearly one of the best in the last thirty years), director Christopher Nolan has delivered his shining star; a masterpiece that has set a new standard in [...]

Hancock: Big jerk, bigger mess

By David W. Shelton On July 3, 2008 · Add Comment · In Movie Reviews
In a summer where superheroes clearly have staked their territory, Hancock makes the biggest mess of all of them. The weird thing about this mess is that it’s what the film intended. Part superhero movie, part whacked-out theology, and part jerk-gets-redeemed story, Hancock has so many irons in the fire that the audience just doesn’t [...]

Wanted: Promises action, delivers

By David W. Shelton On July 3, 2008 · Add Comment · In Movie Reviews
Wanted, the new action film from Universal Pictures, is a crowd-pleasing action film that’s sure to keep the adrenaline pumped in audiences everywhere. Before I continue with this review, perhaps I should confess my own secret love for underdog-turned-badass movies since there’s that twelve-year-old in me that will never grow up. Films like Wanted appeal [...]

A WALL-E world we can all believe in

By David W. Shelton On July 2, 2008 · Add Comment · In Movie Reviews
Part E.T., part Short Circuit, the new Pixar film WALL-E evokes the fondest memories from both of those 1980’s too-cute-to-forget films. Both charming and intelligent, movie-goers will welcome this delectable blend of technology and emotion, and will be drawn into a story that is as heartwarming as it is educational. WALL-E carries on the mantle [...]

Hulk 2: Now that’s more like it!

By David W. Shelton On June 19, 2008 · Add Comment · In Movie Reviews
The Incredible Hulk (hereafter Hulk 2) is the second of the big Marvel Comics adaptations for this year, following closely on the heels of the wildly successful (and far better) Iron Man. The filmmakers would love for us to forget a few things, though—namely the 2003 Ang Lee film, Hulk. For me, that’s not too [...]

Indiana Jones: big adventure, big nostalgia

By David W. Shelton On May 23, 2008 · Add Comment · In Movie Reviews
With the advent of Memorial Day Weekend, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull kicks off the holiday stretch with a rousing race through jungles of all types, promising action, reunions, and lots of booby-trapped labyrinths and ancient artifacts. This third sequel to 1982’s masterpiece, Raiders of the Lost Ark, is a fitting [...]

Prince Caspian: good, but confused

By David W. Shelton On May 18, 2008 · 2 Comments · In Movie Reviews
There’s a lot to like with The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (Hereafter Caspian). Unfortunately, there’s also a lot to dislike. With a mix of teen angst, childlike yearning, and rebel-gone-right personalities among the royal Pevensie brothers and sisters, our heroes (and presumably audiences) have returned once again to the world run by the most [...]

No, Speed Racer, NO!

By David W. Shelton On May 10, 2008 · Add Comment · In Movie Reviews
Oh, how I wanted to like Speed Racer. I remembered those years in the mid-seventies when the theme song announced the beginning of a show filled with racing, chases, fights, comedy, and a little bit of love. To give the Wachowski brothers a little bit of credit, their script and directing captured beautifully the style [...]

‘Iron Man’ a well oiled machine

By David W. Shelton On May 2, 2008 · 1 Comment · In Movie Reviews
Iron Man is a film that had everything going against it. It languished for years in development hell, went through no less than three potential directors, at least two other title stars (including Tom Cruise – yikes!), and eventually became the first film financed by a new film studio division of Marvel Comics. Once director [...]

It’s hard to not like "For the Bible Tells Me So"

By David W. Shelton On April 13, 2008 · 1 Comment · In Gay Christians, Movie Reviews
For the Bible Tells Me So, a film by Daniel Karslake, chronicles the story of six Christian families who have all wrestled with having gay or lesbian children. As the film’s marketing material says, it questions why the Bible is used to justify hate. Can the love between two people ever be an abomination? Is [...]
