Dignity and Respect for LGBTs: A bigot’s greatest fear

On March 28, 2015 By David W. Shelton
Marriage equality, or what many people call “gay marriage,” is going to become a nationwide reality by this June. Every single legal analyst that understands the 14th Amendment knows this. It’s a simple matter of equal treatment under the law. Civil marriage for same-sex couples is not a religious matter, so states are required to [...]

Respect, Trust, Communication, and Sex: All parts of a great relationship

On July 12, 2014 By David W. Shelton
What is the formula to a great relationship? It's really not rocket science — but it does take a little compromise. A great relationship is like a car engine: It takes air, fuel, spark, and lubricant to get it going and keep it going for the long term. What are the relational equivalence to the engine? Find out after the fold.

Offended by the American Flag? Nope.

On June 22, 2014 By David W. Shelton
A trend for right-wing followers is to display bumper stickers that say, "if you don't like my flags, leave the country." They might not be quite as patriotic as they claim.

Those mean old homosexuals!

On May 24, 2014 By David W. Shelton
The last two years have been simply incredible for the LGBT equality movement, especially with the advance of marriage equality for same-sex couples. As of today, 19 states have full marriage equality with other states working their way through the courts. More people than ever support their gay and lesbian neighbors’ rights. But not everyone is celebrating.

TN Senate kills “Turn the Gays Away” Bill in Committee

On February 18, 2014 By David W. Shelton
Claiming that the "Turn the Gays Away" bill was not designed to allow businesses to discriminate against gay people, Senator Brian Kelsey (R-Germantown) asked his colleague, Senator Mike Bell (R-Meigs County) to refer SB2566 to subcommittee. The bill is effectively dead.

Sincere Religious Beliefs as an Excuse to Discriminate?

On February 13, 2014 By David W. Shelton
For years, anti-gay politicians and religious impersonators have been warning their followers that the gays want to put preachers in jail and that LGBT equality will allow the gays to fully and legally intimidate, bully, and discriminate against Christians. A new flurry of bills throughout the country has tipped their cards to the rest of us — and the reality of their goals is nothing short of horrifying. While these professional bigots do all they can to convince us that the gays are the danger, they’re working hard to put the gays in jail, and give legal blessing to anti- gay discrimination.

Vandals strike Chick-Fil-A with Pro-Gay Graffiti

On January 16, 2014 By David W. Shelton
Cookeville, Tennessee isn't known for being overly supportive for the LGBT community, which may be part of what drove one LGBT supporter to tag a local Chick-Fil-A store with the message, "GOD (Loves) Fags & Chicken." It was spray-painted on the side of their restaurant a few days ago. It's not the first time this has happened, either.

Another Comparison of Gays to Terrorists

On January 14, 2014 By David W. Shelton
Mat Staver and Matt Barber, both of Liberty Counsel, really don't like gay people. They haven't found an anti-gay law they didn't like, and they love to throw around words like "homofascist" when talking about pro-LGBT groups like GLAAD. When Phil Robertson made his veiled comparison of gays to terrorists during his GQ interview last month, most of us were appalled that he would say such stupid things around a microphone.

District Judge declares Oklahoma Marriage Equality Ban Unconstitutional

On January 14, 2014 By David W. Shelton
The Human Rights Campaign has reported that United States District Judge Terence Kern has ruled that Oklahoma's ban on marriage equality is unconstitutional. Unlike Utah, though, the ruling is stayed pending an almost guaranteed appeal to a higher court.

Nigeria Begins Anti-Gay Persecution with Arrests

On January 14, 2014 By David W. Shelton
This week, Nigeria became the latest country to toughen its anti-gay laws by prescribing prison terms of up to 14 years for anyone convicted of breaking their new draconian anti-gay laws. Several media sources have reported that at least 38 people have been arrested under the new law. According to CBS news, “the law prohibits [...]

Delgaudio’s ‘Stormy Night’ Email Re-Enacted

On January 13, 2014 By David W. Shelton
When Eugene Delgaudio writes, no one listens. No one, that is, except the little old ladies he cons into writing him checks every year — and the few of us that chortle at his asinine claims. A few times a year, he puts out a slightly revised version of his "Stormy Night" story where long-haired gay men with earrings mock him as runs out of a warehouse filled with bulging boxes.

It is NOT a choice. Here’s why it matters.

On January 12, 2014 By David W. Shelton
The discussion over LGBT rights and equality is rife with emotion, debated with passion, and unfortunately, peppered with misinformation. Many of the discussions from those opposed to LGBT equality use words like “lifestyle,” “behavior,” and my favorite, “sodomy.” Of course, there’s the even more religious sounding variation — sodomite. We talk about issues like marriage, the workplace, and even walking down the street holding hands. Through it all, an astonishing discussions, arguments, and debates are based on the single greatest myth: that sexual orientation is a choice.

The Folly of the Right Wing Rage Machine

On January 6, 2014 By David W. Shelton
Quick. Think of a public figure who made statements about homosexuality outside of his regular job and was dismissed from his job as a result. Now imagine the right wing outrage that came as a direct result of this dismissal. First Amendment! Censorship! If you were thinking of Phil Robertson, you assume correctly that the rage was instantaneous. If you were thinking of the slightly more recent article written by former Minnesota Vikings kicker Chris Kluwe, well, his outspokenness was on the opposite side, so we get crickets from the right wing.

What the Duck? Why the Right Wing has Totally Quacked

On December 21, 2013 By David W. Shelton
Yes, we are all tired of the Phil Robertson and Duck Dynasty “controversy.” My own posts on Facebook on the topic drew fever-pitched debates and even resulted in one person un-friending me because I insisted that it has nothing to do with “Freedom of speech.” Once I stopped reading and rolling my eyes at the ridiculous comments on the whole ducking issue, I realized that if this was the front line of today’s culture war, then it was nothing more than a distraction of where the real battles were being fought.

Gay Cakes and the Exploding Heads of Buttercream Bigotry

On December 13, 2013 By Rev. M. Vernon Hunt
Guest writer Rev. M. Vernon Hunt obliterates NOM president Brian Brown's statement that baking a cake as a business service is somehow a form of religious artistic expression.
