The Only Choice for Gays is Integrity

By David W. Shelton On June 17, 2015 · Add Comment · In Gay Marriage, Gay Rights, General Commentaries
Anti-gay rhetoric insists that being gay is a choice, but the reality is that the only choice for LGBT people is the choice of whether or not to be honest with themselves and everyone around them.

Four Words: Can Gays Change their Sexual Orientation?

By David W. Shelton On December 20, 2012 · Add Comment · In Ex-Gay Fraud, Gay Rights, podcast
On December 13, an anti-gay speaker named Tommy Vallejos spoke in opposition to my proposal for the City of Clarksville to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the City's internal hiring nondiscrimination policy. During his five minute scripted speech, he laid out a series of distorted facts, misapplied laws (including a clear confusion as to just what Tennessee's Equal Access to Interstate Commerce Act really covers), and outright falsehoods.

Two New Books Bring Sanity in Gay Christian Discussion

By David W. Shelton On November 12, 2012 · 2 Comments · In Christianity, General Commentaries
Sanity is a rare thing in today’s world regarding the gay and Christian “debate,” and it’s nice to find a little every once in a while. After anti-gay groups were handed defeat after defeat in this year’s election cycle, we’re finally beginning to see movement toward full equality for the LGBT community. Except in church.

The Conversation Begins

By David W. Shelton On June 29, 2012 · 5 Comments · In Christianity, podcast, The Rainbow Kingdom
The question of whether or not we can have a civil conversation about LGBT issues and the church has been answered. That answer is a throaty, resounding, “yes.” It was billed as a “A Conversation over Coffee,” and became so much more. It was perfectly planned. We had everything lined up. Naturally, that meant that everything that could have gone wrong, did. But we would quickly learn that when everything starts to unravel, that’s when God shows up.

This is What Love in Action Looks Like – A Story of Grace

By David W. Shelton On May 11, 2012 · 1 Comment · In Gay Christians, I'm Gay, Movie Reviews
Full circle. It’s a phrase that denotes a kind of personal completion that a person rarely achieves, but is a momentous occasion when they do. That’s how I felt after watching the newly released documentary, This is What Love in Action Looks Like. The film chronicles the story of Zach Stark, who was forced by his parents into Refuge, a live-in program that was centered around the concept of reparative therapy. Zach’s story is one that spoke to me years ago when I first heard about it in the summer of 2005. At the time, we were in the process of forming a new PFLAG (Parents, Friends & Families of Lesbians and Gays) chapter, and it was a poignant reminder of just how much we need to support each other:

Stories of Reconciliation: I Found Grace

By David W. Shelton On April 29, 2012 · 1 Comment · In Stories of Reconciliation, The Rainbow Kingdom
By John Smid As the second year of my departure from Love In Action came along, I was feeling satisfied, I was challenged in areas of my heart that were brand new for me to look at. I was also finding a much needed rest in my soul, and Jesus was coming into these new areas that had opened up. I was gaining a new understanding of an old word, “grace.” What is grace and how does this apply to our Christian walk? I wasn’t sure I truly understood it from personal experience. I had always heard, “Grace is the unmerited favor of God upon our lives.”

Politics of Change: Exploring the ex-gay ministries and their abuses

By David W. Shelton On January 9, 2012 · 11 Comments · In Gay Christians, Gay Rights, General Commentaries
Can gays really change their sexual orientation? This is probably the most important question that should be asked — primarily within the church.
