Everyone flaunts their sexuality — not just the gays

By David W. Shelton On September 13, 2013 · 2 Comments · In Gay Rights, General Commentaries
Every time I hear someone ask why we gay people should have to “advertise” our homosexuality or our “sexual preference,” I have an instant urge to reach down that person’s throat. Yes, I’m human. But when I sit down and think about just why I am so aggravated every time someone says this, it begins to make plenty of sense. For the record, It’s the same reaction I have when I’m “admonished” to not “flaunt” my sexual orientation (whatever the hell that means).

Discussion: Christianity & Homosexuality

By David W. Shelton On February 1, 2009 · 2 Comments · In Politics
A friend of mine sent me a link to this video, which has a group of three Christian ministers all being asked a question – of how the evangelical church should address the complexity of homosexual relationships. The three men are Chuck Colson, Greg Boyd, and Shane Claiborne. It’s a short video, but worth a [...]

Are You Sure? Part 2

By David W. Shelton On September 25, 2008 · Add Comment · In Gay Christians, General Commentaries
Author’s note: This piece is part 2 of this series – If you haven’t read the first half of this essay, I encourage you to check it out! As Published in Church Street Freedom Press, April 28, 2005 Thankfully, people stopped asking me if I was sure if I was going to heaven. But then, [...]

Are you sure? Part 1

By David W. Shelton On September 22, 2008 · Add Comment · In Gay Christians, General Commentaries
Author’s note: This piece is another re-post of an earlier article. My goal is to have all of these posted in the next few weeks. I’ve had them on another website for a few years, and I’m combining as much as I can. A word of caution — this article is a candid discussion of [...]

Three bills for gay equality should be passed

By David W. Shelton On April 25, 2007 · Add Comment · In Gay Rights, Politics
Three bills that would put an end to serious injustices against GLBT people have been filed over the last few months in Washington, DC. The first, a bill that would repeal the failed “Don’t-Ask-Don’t-Tell-Don’t-Pursue” law that bans openly gay people from serving in the military, was filed a few months ago. The second is a [...]

Can evangelical Christianity be reconciled with GLBT-affirming Christians?

By David W. Shelton On January 3, 2007 · 1 Comment · In Uncategorized
I’ve been participating in a few discussions on the topic of sexuality and Christianity, and it is becoming increasingly clear that the message of inclusive Christianity is critical. My passion has been for a complete reconciliation with the GLBT community and the Christian church. Those of us who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender all [...]

Are we too stubborn to change?

By David W. Shelton On December 14, 2006 · 2 Comments · In Uncategorized
I can be pretty stubborn sometimes. Okay. Scratch that. I’m rarely NOT stubborn. I suppose that’s what I get for being from a long line of stubborn people. My parents are happily divorced, and I recall one particular conversation with my mother. I don’t remember what brought out the conversation, but somehow it digressed into [...]

The dust settles…

By David W. Shelton On November 8, 2006 · 1 Comment · In General Commentaries
Election Day has come and gone. Thank God. The smoke has cleared for the most part locally, leaving few surprises. Tennessee joined the ranks of states that have written discrimination into its constitution by “defining” marriage as being between one man and one woman. The measure passed with 80% of the vote. I expected Virginia [...]

It’s nice to not be a lone voice…

By David W. Shelton On November 7, 2006 · 2 Comments · In Gay Christians
I’ve taken a lot of flack for my compassion for Ted Haggard in his fall. The more I read, the more I realize that I’m not alone, which is kind of nice. http://www.beliefnet.com/story/203/story_20331_1.html http://www.beliefnet.com/blogs/godspolitics/2006/11/jim-wallis-we-are-all-sinners.html I look forward to seeing others who understand that compassion isn’t always popular. Yes, he lied to his family. Yes, he [...]

The Rainbow Kingdom: UPDATE! First draft COMPLETED!

By David W. Shelton On October 10, 2006 · 1 Comment · In The Rainbow Kingdom
Well, the first draft of the book is finished, so now comes the painful EDITING process. Yuck. But, here’s another tease… the BACK COVER copy! Enjoy! Like many gay Chrisitans, David W. Shelton spent years struggling with an internal war between his faith and sexual orientation. By the time the dust settled, he emerged into [...]

Christianity & Homosexuality part 4 of 8: Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13

By David W. Shelton On September 16, 2006 · 4 Comments · In Gay Christians, The Rainbow Kingdom
There are two passages in Scripture which seem to be clearer than any others in the Old or New Testament on whether or not homosexual relationships are condemned. Most of us who either are gay or know gay men often scratch their heads when they are confronted with these two verses, often dismissing them as [...]

Christianity & Homosexuality Part 3 of 8: Sodom and Gomorrah

By David W. Shelton On September 14, 2006 · 2 Comments · In Gay Christians, The Rainbow Kingdom
No discussion about Christianity and homosexuality can be complete without a reference to Sodom and Gomorrah. Usually, the cities best known for God’s wrath are invoked to suggest that if America doesn’t change her ways, then God owes Sodom an apology. At the very least, Sodom is shown by our conservative and fundamentalist friends as [...]

Christianity & Homosexuality part 2 of 8: Romans 1:26-27

By David W. Shelton On September 10, 2006 · 42 Comments · In Gay Christians, The Rainbow Kingdom
Note: this article was revised on November 18, 2011 to add clarity. At the beginning of this series, I dared to ask the question, “Can a person be gay and a Christian.” Naturally, the first reaction by many sincere Christians is that “the Bible condemns homosexuality.” This series will continue to explore this very controversial [...]

Defining Gay

By David W. Shelton On April 3, 2006 · 7 Comments · In General Commentaries
“David, are you gay?” Another classmate asked me that question once when I was in the sixth grade. I had no idea how to answer that question. Well, I take that back. I did. I drew on my knowledge that the word “gay” was used in the theme song for The Flintstones. After all, they [...]
